City layout

Edinburgh is a city of two halves separated by the wide green swathe of the Princes Street Gardens.

To the South lies the Old town, where Edinburgh Castle sits on top of an extinct volcano, with the Royal Mile trailing behind it on the spine of the outcrop and opening into a number of historic squares. Notable buildings include St Giles Cathedral and the Law Courts.

To the North of Princes Street Gardens is the New Town. Begun in the 18th century to solve city overcrowding it features some of the world’s very finest Georgian architecture and town planning.

George Street was its original epicentre, but these days Princes Street commands most attention, as the city’s foremost shopping street and because it affords some of the finest views of the Old Town.

Avanta’s business centre in Edinburgh is located by Princes Street and close to the First Minister of Scotland’s official residence, in the supremely elegant Charlotte Square.

Other notable areas include the South Side, which is a popular residential area and home to the City’s University; the Mound, on which is built the Bank of Scotland’s headquarters amongst other buildings; and the former Nor Loch, which is now the site of Princes Street Gardens and Edinburgh Waverley mainline station.

Business in Edinburgh

Edinburgh has been a centre for commerce since business was invented and is the strongest economy by GDP/capita outside of London. It’s also one of Europe’s fastest growing economic regions.

Industry is mostly based around banking, financial services, higher education and tourism (13m visitors per year, including nearly 500,000 for the annual Edinburgh festival).

Organisations based in the city include Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, Scottish Widows and Standard Life. Scottish & Newcastle and the Caledonian brewery are also Edinburgh based.

Edinburgh also has a port, at Leith, and this is a further important industry, with busy routes to Scandinavia and Northern Europe.

Getting around

With an international airport, the East Coast Mainline, a thriving port and strong motorway links, Edinburgh is highly accessible to the world. Then within the city the Assembly has recently voted for the development of a tram system.

Construction work has already begun. Edinburgh also benefits from a completed crossrail system which brings mainline rail to the heart of the city. And of course it is one of the most pleasant cities in the UK for walking around on a pleasant morning.
