Edinburgh City Centre
Edinburgh is a city of two halves separated by the wide green swathe of the Princes Street Gardens.
To the South lies the Old town, where Edinburgh Castle sits on top of an extinct volcano, with the Royal Mile trailing behind it on the spine of the outcrop and opening into a number of historic squares. Notable buildings include St Giles Cathedral and the Law Courts.
To the North of Princes Street Gardens is the New Town. Building begun in the 18th century to solve city overcrowding and it features some of the world’s very finest Georgian architecture and town planning.
George Street was its original epicentre, but these days Princes Street commands most attention as the city's foremost shopping street and because it affords some of the finest views of the Old Town.
Avanta's business centre in Edinburgh is located by Princes Street and close to the First Minister of Scotlands official residence, in the supremely elegant Charlotte Square.
Doing Business in Edinburgh
Edinburgh has been a centre for commerce since business was invented and is the strongest economy by GDP/capita outside of London. It's also one of Europe's fastest growing economic regions.
Industry is mostly based around banking, financial services, higher education and tourism.
Organisations based in Edinburgh include Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, Scottish Widows and Standard Life. Scottish & Newcastle and the Caledonian brewery are also Edinburgh based. Edinburgh also has a port, at Leith, and this is a further important industry, with busy routes to Scandinavia and Northern Europe.
