Avanta on the button with energy saving initiative.

UK serviced office operator Avanta is introducing a unique computer power saving device which will help reduce CO2 use across its business centres in the UK.

The ecobutton™ is an illumination USB device that acts as a reminder for the user to press it every time the computer is going to be left idle.  When pressed the computer goes into ‘ecomode’ and operates more efficiently when not in use.

Avanta is aiming to offer the ecobutton™ to its clients across all its UK centres, with around 4400 computers potentially being fitted with the device.

Working off the proviso that a business running 500 computers could save over 34 Tonnes of CO2 per year by using the ecobutton™ for just 2 hours per day, Avanta could potentially save up to 2992 tonnes of CO2 a year.

Earlier this year Avanta launched a campaign aimed at reducing energy use across its 17 business centres in London, the Thames Valley, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.

The ‘Switch it Off’ campaign encourages occupiers to switch off all electrical appliances such as computers, photocopiers, fax machines and lighting at night and over the weekend.  Avanta closely monitored the energy levels saved by this new initiative, with some centres reducing its energy use by up to 10%.  The company has an-going commitment to driving down energy use and will continue to pay close attention to energy levels, and encouraging clients to switch off their equipment.

The ‘Switch it Off’ campaign is part of Avanta’s overall commitment to the environment.  The company ensures that recycling bins are available in all breakout areas and kitchens for recycling of paper and mixed packaging.  A number of business centres benefit from bicycle racks and shower facilities to enable and encourage people to cycle – or run – into work.

David Kinnaird, Avanta’s Director of Group Operations, said:  “As a company, we are always looking at ways to reducing our energy use and encouraging occupiers to ‘think green’.  The ecobutton is the latest initiative which is geared towards reducing CO2 and of course there is the added financial incentive of reducing electricity bills. “
