With a population of over one billion people India is the world’s largest democracy and one of the most rapidly growing major economies.

Since the early 1990s there have been significant economic reforms, including privatisation programmes and the relaxation of investment and foreign exchange controls.

The result has been a massive influx of foreign capital, with companies attracted by the availability of a well-educated, English-speaking workforce, a relatively low cost base and India’s strategic location.

Whilst agriculture still provides a living for many of India’s half billion strong workforce, other industries, including finance, technology, engineering and customer services, are booming.

This helped the country achieve a 9.4% increase in GDP during the 2006/7 financial year, with further strong growth predicted in the years to come.
